Fallout 76 Scrap and Crafting

Turn Fallout 76 junk into a manageable crafting routine with workbenches, stash control, repair reserves, and a dated Steam PC resource plan.

Fallout 76 resource management is a loop, not a hunt for one perfect junk list. Collect a sensible amount, inspect what is taking weight, scrap it at the correct bench, and return the components to stash or a planned craft. The best route is the one that keeps a character supplied for the next activity without turning every trip into inventory sorting.

Start with the next craft

Name the item you want to make or repair before collecting. Check its requirements, then identify the missing component and the bench needed to use it. If the recipe is not part of the current goal, do not fill the stash with every material that might become useful someday. A small reserve for repairs, ammunition, food, and camp building is more valuable than an unexamined pile of heavy junk.

Inspect junk before scrapping

At a workbench, scrap ordinary junk into components and review the result. Keep an item only when it has a clear purpose, such as a plan requirement, camp object, quest clue, or short-term repair. Mark the material you repeatedly lack in a note. The note should include the date, character, activity, and item that exposed the shortage; a component needed for one build may be irrelevant to another.

Inventory weight is a diagnostic. If the character is over the limit, scrap heavy junk first, move components to stash, remove duplicate weapons, and review aid and ammunition. If the stash is full, sort by purpose instead of keeping the highest quantity of everything. A working reserve is easier to maintain when the main build and backup weapon are known.

Make the C.A.M.P. functional

The official Fallout 76 overview describes the C.A.M.P. as a movable base for storage, construction, crafting, and a player shop. Place the storage and benches where they can be reached in one short loop. Keep room for a future plan, but do not sacrifice repair access for decoration during the first sessions. When the camp moves, verify that the stash and benches remain part of the new routine before leaving for a distant event.

Farm from activities, not panic

Use a quest, public event, workshop, or known route to collect resources while doing another job. Learn which containers or enemies appear along that route, then stop when the missing component is covered. Joining a team can shorten travel and make a difficult activity safer, but it does not remove the need to check carry weight. If a reward fills the inventory, return to a bench before starting a second activity.

Make a short collection circuit

Choose two or three stops that share a fast-travel anchor and write the missing component beside each stop. Visit the first location, scrap or stash before the next leg, and abandon the circuit when the reserve is full. A small circuit is easier to repeat than an all-day sweep, especially when an event or quest interrupts the route. Compare the result after one run: if the circuit produces too much weight and too few useful components, replace a stop rather than carrying the whole problem back to camp.

Workshops can be part of a resource plan when the character is ready to defend and maintain them. Read the workshop objective, estimate the travel cost, and avoid taking one only for a material that is cheaper to obtain on an existing quest route. A teammate may make the activity safer, but the character still needs a stash plan for the output and a way to recover if the workshop is contested.

Protect a repair reserve

Do not convert every component into a single upgrade. Keep enough material for the primary weapon, armor, and a basic camp repair. When a craft consumes a rare ingredient, compare the gain with the cost of the next repair. If the choice is uncertain, store the ingredient and test the current item for one more route. A dated resource note is more reliable than an old guide that omits its game version.

Scope note

This page covers Fallout 76 base game AppID 1151340 on Steam PC, live default branch version 1.7.25.39 checked 2026-08-10. Exact component quantities, recipes, vendor stock, and reward tables may change; console, DLC, PTS, and unverified farming claims are out of scope.
